After studying Archaeology and Anthropology in Italy and in England, Stefano Savona began working as a freelance photographer in 1995. In 1999, he decided to devote himself to directing and producing documentaries. In 2006, he made the short Dans le même bateau and the feature Carnets d'un combattant kurde. Three years later, he made Cast Lead, that won the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2009. In 2010, he shot Spezzacatene, followed a year later by Tahrir, Place de la Libération, a documentary about the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. The latter was selected at several film festivals including Locarno and New York. In 2018, he made Samouni Road, the portrait of a family in Gaza, that won the Œil d'Or Best Documentary Award at the 2018 Cannes film festival.
