A photographer since his teens, Sylvère Petit captures the presence of animals to question the human gaze. Convinced that humans are animals among others, he chose cinema as a tool for sensory and political awakening. Since 2009, he has been making documentary and fiction films that challenge traditional representations of life. His notable works include Biòu (2014), an immersion into the heart of bullfighting tradition; Ani-Maux (2017), a sensitive reflection on the limits of the animal gaze; and Vivant parmi les vivants (2023), his first feature film, bringing together animals and thinkers such as Vinciane Despret and Baptiste Morizot. At the same time, he is working on a photographic project, Les Métamorphoses, and has published En attendant les vautours (Actes Sud, 2025), a personal account of images and living beings.
Following in the footsteps of a Przewalski's mare, a city dog, and two philosophers (Baptiste Morizot and Vinciane Despret), this is a fascinating reflection on our relationship with other living beings which, by reversing the perspective, raises new questions about our place in the world.
