Xun Sero is a Maya-Tzotzil filmmaker, born in Chiapas, Mexico. He began his work in documentary filmmaking by chronicling events related to the struggle of indigenous peoples in Chiapas. He tries to develop the true cultural heritage of the characters and to avoid clichés about indigenous peoples. He currently works as a cinematographer. Mom, his directorial debut, was selected at Hot Docs, IDFA and FIC Guadalajara, as well as more than 60 festivals, winning 20 awards. In 2022 Variety magazine considered Mom as “one of the 10 Mexican films that contribute to diversity and giving voice to that diversity.”
Filmmaker Xun Sero grew up as a Tzotzil Mexican among the sacredness of the Virgin of Guadalupe and Mother Earth. As the son of a single mother, he grew up between mockery for not having a father and blaming his mother for it. _Mom_ is a dialogue between a mother and a son who explore their contradictions, who know and recognize each other, and reflect on the perpetuation of naturalized violence.
