Cherries is a delicate fiction-documentary exploring the relationship between a recently retired father and his son during a cherry-picking afternoon. As the father tries to harvest the fruit while catching up with his son, the cherries fade into the background, revealing the complexities, humor, and tenderness of their intergenerational connection. The son is the film’s director, and the father is his real-life father. The film blurs the line between personal memory and cinematic storytelling, offering audiences a subtle, intimate, and beautifully observed portrait of family life.
Vytautas Katkus is one of the most promising young Lithuanian directors and cinematographers. Cherries was selected for the Short Film Competition in Cannes; his debut short film Community Gardens (2019) screened in the Cannes Critics’ Week, and The Visitor, his first feature, premiered in Karlovy Vary in 2025.
