Sisters: Dream & Variations

Poster image Sisters: Dream & Variations

Tyr and Jasa grew up in an artistic household where art was a way of life. Quirky and insightful sisters, Tyr is a musician and singer while Jasa is an interdisciplinary artist. Inspired by their great-grandmother’s recordings of Icelandic folk songs, they have developed artistic practices that draw on their colourful imaginations and Icelandic roots. Their exploration leads them to journey to Iceland for the first time and collaborate on a project that brings together their artistic disciplines and cultural heritage.

"Art is something that’s outside of yourself."

Sisters: Dream & Variations is an insightful observation of the lives and artistic approach of quirky sisters Tyr and Jasa, a musician and interdisciplinary artist respectively of Icelandic descent.

The audience is quickly immersed in the playful, scintillating oneiric universe of our protagonists through the film’s singular poetic language. Hailing from a long lineage of artists (both of their parents are prolific visual artists, and their great-grandmother was an Icelandic folk singer), Tyr and Jasa have been surrounded by creativity for as long as they can remember. Born out of a desire to further explore their Icelandic heritage, the two sisters find themselves embarking on a journey to Iceland for the first time where they collaboratively participate in a month-long residency with ArtsIceland culminating in a fantastical staging of a folk take in the North Fjords.

Through a collage of documentary, archives, animation and a certain esotericism, filmmaker, and editor Catherine Legault shines as a romantic lyricist in this debut film spotlighting two endlessly imaginative women who provide a wonderful portrait of the power and beauty of intergenerational transmissions of culture and knowledge.
