Breakwater

Poster image Breakwater

A group of young lesbians from São Paulo goes on a trip to a remote beach. While they wait for New Year's Eve, they build a safe and pleasant environment through music and friendship. They take care of themselves, they own their bodies and their memories and they feel free.

With its sun-soaked, sensual images, “Quebramar” reveals a very talented director of photography as well as director. Cris Lyra manages to capture the group’s energy, for example during the drawing session where, lying on the sand, they all express themselves with their unique, non-stereotypical, beautiful bodies. This complicity between the women filmed as well as the director’s perfect positioning put viewers right in the middle of the free-flowing conversation, the serene intimacy that’s as sweet and gentle as the lyrics of one of the songs played by the fireside, “Let feelings flourish/And they’ll make you grow.” There’s the joy of being together but also of moving forward in unison, healing wounds and learning to love oneself. A salutary and glowing countershot of Jair Bolsonaro’s violent, homophobic Brazil.
