Born in New York in 1945, Barbara Ulrich comes from a Jewish family that moved to Montreal in the early 1950s. She first became known for her iconic role in The Cat in the Bag (1964), directed by her partner, Gilles Groulx. With her natural acting style and strong screen presence, Ulrich embodied the spirit of a young generation searching for identity and change in a rapidly transforming Quebec. Following this landmark role, she held leadership positions in the arts and cultural sector, served as a board member of organizations working in independent video and new media, and sat on various advisory committees. She served on the Montreal Regional Arts and Culture Advisory Committee (CCR) as a representative for multimedia and new media technologies, and also headed the Conseil québécois des arts médiatiques (CQAM), an organization dedicated to supporting Quebec’s independent creators and organizations in film, video, and new media. Barbaracadabra marks her directorial debut at the age of 80.
