Sixty years after playing a cult role, Barbara—recovering from a debilitating injury—is torn between her desire to direct her first film and her fear of failure. With only Renaud, her friend in his thirties, to help her, they attempt the impossible, defying time and doubt. Creation, like healing, requires courage and patience. _Barbaracadabra_ is a magic trick unfolding in real time: chaotic, unpredictable, and alive.

A summit meeting between Barbara Ulrich and Renaud Lessard. She embodied the spirit of a generation of young people seeking change in a Quebec in the throes of social upheaval. The unforgettable heroine of Gilles Groulx’s The Cat in the Bag (1964), she became known as “the cat girl” and “Quebec’s Anna Karina.” He is one of the most promising Quebec filmmakers of his generation. His first feature, Mad Dog Labine, won the Grand Prize in the National Competition at the 2018 Festival du nouveau cinéma. Drawing heavily on the cinéma direct movement of the 1960s, this experimental film—which builds and unravels before our eyes—takes every creative liberty. Charming, funny, and moving, the Ulrich-Lessard duo, taking turns in front of and behind the camera, share their thoughts and perspectives, offering a lighthearted yet profound reflection on art, friendship, and the passing of time.
