Julien Faraut is a French filmmaker born in 1978 in Colombes, France. After earning a master's degree in contemporary history, he joined the French National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance (INSEP), where he oversees the institute's 16 mm sports film archives. He directed his first feature-length documentary, A New Look at Olympia 52, in 2013. In 2018, he released John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection, which was selected for the Berlin Forum, where it won the Audience Award, as well as for Cinéma du Réel. In 2021, he directed The Witches of the Orient, a documentary about the Japanese women's volleyball team of the 1960s.
