Lisa Sfriso is an independent Quebec filmmaker who navigates between genres depending on the subject, though reality always remains her primary source of inspiration. From 2000 to 2006, she was actively involved with the artist-run center Vidéo Femmes in Quebec City, where she directed several documentaries, including Un toit, un droit, co-directed with a group of Vidéo Femmes collaborators during the height of the housing crisis. A committed documentarian, her films address social issues and causes close to her heart. In fiction, she focuses on resilience and both individual and collective memory. Her fiction short film Les adieux stood out in 2006, winning the Silence, on court prize for Best Canadian Short Film and the Audience Award at the Cinémental Festival, as well as the Childhood Audience Award at the Vaulx-en-Velin Francophone Short Film Festival in France. Her first feature-length documentary, À contre-courant, about Françoise David's journey from civic involvement to political engagement alongside her close collaborators, received the Télé-Québec Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois in 2013. Since then, Sfriso has divided her time between creating documentary and fiction films and sharing her passion for cinema through teaching, programming, and cultural mediation.
