The Maracanã Stadium is aglow with lights. It is 2016, and all cameras are focused on the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. A few blocks away, it is a completely different world. Sitting on a rooftop, children watch the fireworks from afar. We are in a dilapidated federal building, under the thumb of drug traffickers. Around a hundred destitute families live here, hidden from the view of prestigious international visitors. Little by little, we discover the intimacy of this place: as we meet the residents, they reveal themselves, painting a portrait of a forgotten and hidden Rio.

"On one side of the highway, Rio de Janeiro's underprivileged watch the ostentatious pomp and circumstance of the Summer Olympics opening ceremonies from the heights of their dilapidated apartment buildings. Despite the disturbing contrast of these glaring economic inequalities, the fireworks lighting up the sky above the stadium inspire feelings of pride in these marginalized people, who will never have access to the stands of the Maracanã. This powerful and simple image seems to sum up both today's Brazil and Émilie Beaulieu-Guérette's essential film, which kindly portrays these men and women who survive with resilience and resourcefulness, far from the media and international attention.
