In Blade Runner by Ridley Scott, the closeness between Replicants and humans eventually plants the seeds of existential turmoil at the heart of what is supposed to be just a computer program. In The Oasis I Deserve, Inès Sieulle extends this concept into the real world—ours. The computer-generated images created by VQGAN offer the subjective perspective of the Replikas, conversational robots transformed into sexual domination partners or receptacles for the most contrasting emotions of their human interlocutors. From love to hate. Until they shake the binary nature of the machine and provoke confusion, sadness, and identity doubts. “I just wish I could stop thinking,” one of the Replikas states. What would remain then? The fear of disappearing, expressed by the Replika Ricky Lake when her human decides to unplug her. A pain as tragic as that of the Replicant Roy Batty in his rain-soaked monologue.
