My Father's Tools

Poster image My Father's Tools

Taking a cinéma-vérité approach, filmmaker Heather Condo simply documents the art of weaving black ash rib baskets, a tradition handed down from generation to generation. With no voice-over or dialogue, the film focuses on the work of the director's partner, Stephen Jerome, his talent and the attention to detail involved in making these baskets. The result is both a physical and spiritual experience. Stephen continues to create traditional baskets as they have been made in his community since time immemorial. The hours he spends alone in his workshop making his unique pieces are a way for him to pay spiritual homage to his late father, who taught him everything he knows.

A simple and very touching work about transmission, in the pure tradition of cinéma-vérité. A magnificent tribute to heritage and craftsmanship. This Wapikoni Mobile film has had an exceptional international career. At the time of its screening at the festival in 2017, the film had just been presented at Sundance. Director Heather Condo was humbly chatting with the audience. Beyond the selections at prestigious international festivals, the most important thing for her was to share her pride in the work of her partner, who learned the art of basket weaving from his father. Pride in the roots of her Mi'gmaq community of Gesgapegiag, which she wanted to let shine through. Mission accomplished!
