_Faded Photograph _retraces the life of the filmmaker’s father, who died when she was 12, through a montage of his memoirs. Drawing on family films and the diaries he kept throughout his life, Fanie Pelletier tells the story of an ordinary man whose personal memories echo those of an entire generation emerging from Quebec’s Great Darkness, a period when liberation also meant losing one’s bearings. Thus begins a dialogue steeped in nostalgia between the joyful videos and the tormented writings, gradually taking on a universal resonance.

Through a sensitive arrangement of her father’s intimate writings—poetic fragments imbued with anguish—over a meticulously composed visual tapestry of photographs, home movies, and family videos, the filmmaker reveals a man in search of bearings. In this profound act of vulnerability, she weaves a moving (auto)biographical narrative, allowing scattered fragments of memory to recover a meaning long buried within a man who did not identify with the dominant model of masculinity of his time. With Faded Photograph, Fanie Pelletier thus opens a poignant posthumous dialogue with a father she comes to know through the creative process. This personal portrait also offers a singular window onto Quebec society, as well as an innovative reflection on memory (and archives) as they fade with time…
