Three Comrades of Montreal

Poster image Three Comrades of Montreal

Giovanni, Francesco, and Salvatore have passed the age of 80 and are proud to still consider themselves communist or socialist comrades. All three left their poor villages in southern Italy after the war to settle in Montreal, where they maintained close ties with Italian left-wing parties while also being active in Canadian progressive unions and parties. Through images, personal documents, and public archives, these three "comrades" share their migration experiences, as well as the history of their activism and the harsh living conditions of Italian workers and their families. At the same time, the film offers a tender look at their lives as retirees and their concerns for their children and future generations.

Bonjourno! Benvenuti a Montreal! Prepare a plate of pasta and a generous pour of Chianti before you snuggle in to watch this handcrafted documentary directed by Bruno Ramirez and Giovanni Princigalli. Released in 2019, the film runs for a succinct 52 minutes on a handheld digital format. This film offers a bespoke, natural and poignant exploration of the lives and activism of three Italian immigrants living in Montreal: Giovanni, Francesco, and Salvatore.

With a magnum of Marques de Méricourt on the table, this famous trio, now octogenarians, migrated from the Mezzogiorno of Italy to Montreal in the post-war period. The film pragmatically documents their lifelong commitment to socialist and communist ideologies, as well as their earnest efforts to improve the conditions of Italian workers in Canada. The film cleverly intermingles personal documents, public archives, and excerpts from an earlier documentary by Arthur Lamothe to recount their journeys of political activism, resettlement, and the adversities faced by their community.

Three Comrades of Montreal not only brings notes of the great Canadian master Allan King, but also highlights their past struggles and achievements while touching on their reflections as retirees, gardening tips, and their concerns for future generations. This film showcases their indefatigable spirits and the pivotal role they played in the labor movement within the Italian-Canadian community while also cleverly capturing the essence of their experiences in Quebec. A fabulous double feature alongside Pupa's Garden, also presented on Tënk! After that I then recommend that you end your night with a cannoli and maybe some grappa too. Buonanotte!"
