Blending documentary and fiction, this film does not aim to provide solutions but rather seeks to provoke reflection. Veteran filmmaker Léonard Forest lends his talent to a group of engaged citizens from Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Drawing from their extensive discussions about social inequality, he writes a script that becomes the foundation of the film. The group members also take on the roles of the film’s actors.
The dramatic action unfolds in an imaginary Acadian village. Into this society, controlled and manipulated by a few powerful elites, comes a young teacher. The fresh wind of freedom he brings encounters strong resistance from the ruling class. The documentary aspect of the film serves as a behind-the-scenes look, explaining the origins of its content. While the narrative and village are fictional, the situations depicted are very real.
This film is a tool for social engagement, created as part of the National Film Board of Canada's Challenge for Change / Société nouvelle program. The program aimed to produce activist films to raise awareness of social injustices in Canadian society.
